The tree analogy is so spot on. I found out my now ex-husband was a blight on my tree of life and he affected all my leaves, branches, and tried to poison my roots as well with his lies and half-truths. I most certainly did find out who was who on my tree. And you are correct, you are not automatically treated better based on how long you know a person. In fact, often times just the opposite. I now resemble an oak tree in the last stage of fall, some colorful leaves remain, some branches have been shorn off by lightening and the ravages of many storms. But my roots are strong and have taken hold on solid ground, not sand.

Excellent. Hubby is finding out these things this year. It all also holds true for death of a child (or other loved one I'm sure.) Even family can be the leaves, which shocks the most.
